Genesis 22:1–14 (ESV)
1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.
5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.”
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together.
7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.
14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
“ The prerequisites of the provider “
Subtitle: The Faithful Father “
Father’s
The best thing you could give your children
and do for your children
is to give them Christ
and to show them an example of Christ
Because when you have given them Christ
and showed them an example of Christ
you have given them everything
that they need in life
Yes you have to provide for them
Keep a roof over their head
keep food on the table
put clothes on their backs
but everything else outside of that
you will find that the more you do for them
the more you have to do
and the more you do for them
the less they appreciate you
Example: You give a tricycle they want a bike give them a bike now they want a license give them a license now they want a car the more you do for them the more they want
But when you have given them Jesus
And have been an example of Jesus before them
Then you know
And can THANK GOD
You have given them the best
And EVERYTHING they needed
For Abraham to experience this outcome
In verse 14
With his son Isaac
There were some prerequisites
That had to happen first
Our culture today
Won’t the outcome
Without the Prerequisites [ God got to test you ]
In other words, Abraham
I am testing you with your son
But I’m going to provide for you
In the test
Meaning of “Prerequisite”:
A prerequisite is something that you need to have or do before you can do something else, to get the outcome you need.
Note: Abraham's story in Genesis 22 highlights the qualities of a biblical father as seen through his actions and relationship with God.
Genesis 22 Background
This chapter presents one of the most vivid types (prophetic-symbol patterns) of the Messiah to be found anywhere in the OT. In fact this is the only episode identified in the NT as a type of Christ in both His death and resurrection
22:1–2. The greatest test in the life of Abraham (God tested him) came after he received the promised seed following a long wait. The test was very real: he was to give Isaac back to God. As a test it was designed to prove faith.
And for it to be a real test, it had to go against logic; it had to be something Abraham wanted to resist.
God had told the patriarch to send Ishmael away (21:12–13), and now He told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham had willingly sent Ishmael away, but he would not want to kill Isaac.
It is one thing to claim to trust God’s word when waiting for something; it is quite another thing to trust and obey His word after it is received.
This was a test of how much Abraham would obey God’s word. Would he cling to the boy now that he had him, or would he still obey and return him to the Lord?
In other words how far would Abraham go in obedience? Did he really believe that God would still keep His word and raise the seed of promise?
The Prerequisites of the Provider
1st His Obeisance
Genesis 22:5 (ESV)
5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.”
Note: We see Abraham's reverence and worship of God in the midst of his test with his child. In other words a TEST must bring REVERENCE & WORSHIP.
Note: Remember WORSHIP comes from two words [ WORTH ] & [ SHIP ] , how much God is worth to yo
Note: Abraham's journey to the mountain was an act of worship, demonstrating his deep reverence and respect for God's command. [ A Test & Command ]
Note: Let your children see your Obeisance to God OVER them.
Note: Abraham obeisance to God brought about an OFFERING [ WORSHIP ]
The Prerequisites of the Provider
1st His Obeisance
2nd His Obedience
Genesis 22:2–3 (ESV)
2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
Note: Abraham’s immediate and unwavering obedience to God’s command. [ Abraham didn’t Pray about it ]
Note: Abraham's prompt action without hesitation highlights his complete obedience to God.
I just believe
that God had to come through
Because of verse 3
Abraham got up EARLY in the morning — [ A willingness ]
Note: Do you see in the text that Abraham is making it ALL about God and not himself, not Isaac, but himself
Note: Always obey God, when your kids put you in a situation to disobey God
The Prerequisites of the Provider
1st His Obeisance
2nd His Obedience
3rd The Order
Genesis 22:9 (ESV)
9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
Note: God is THE God of ORDER
It’s a painful Situation
It’s a hurtful Situation
It’s a hard Situation
But Abraham puts the wood in order
Note: God is THE God of ORDER
Genesis 1:1-2:3 outlines the Order of God:
1. Day 1: Light and darkness
2. Day 2: Sky and waters
3. Day 3: Land, seas, and vegetation
4. Day 4: Sun, moon, and stars
5. Day 5: Birds and sea creatures
6. Day 6: Land animals and humans
7. Day 7: God rests, blessing and sanctifying the seventh day
Statement: Anything that has to do with God , don’t like ORDER
Church
Ministry
Christian Homes
Programs
Statement: But your
Job has order
Your child Graduation has order
The courtroom has order
Note: Abraham is also showing Isaac in an indirect way to do things in order
The Order of the Burnt Sacrifice
1. Preparation of the Altar: Abraham built the altar. The text doesn’t detail how the altar was constructed, but traditionally, altars were made of stones or earth (Exodus 20:24-25).
2. Placement of Wood: After building the altar, Abraham arranged the wood on it. This step is clearly mentioned in Genesis 22:9: “Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood.”
3. Binding of Isaac: Abraham bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. The text states: “and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood” (Genesis 22:9).
4. Preparation for the Sacrifice: Abraham then took the knife to slay his son, but before he could do so, an angel of the Lord called out to stop him. Abraham saw a ram caught in a thicket and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son (Genesis 22:10-13).
Note: It’s hard to do things orderly when you don’t have the right frame of mind
Note: Now since Abraham has met all the prerequisites , here’s the OUTCOME
The Prerequisites of the Provider
1st His Obeisance
2nd His Obedience
3rd The Order
4th The Outcome
Genesis 22:12–14 (ESV)
12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.
14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
Note: God’s provision and the reward for faithfulness.
Statement: God's intervention and provision of the ram as a substitute demonstrate the blessings and rewards of faithfulness and trust in God.
Note: God will intervene in some tuff situations in our life when we do things in order.
Conclusion:
Summarize how Abraham’s journey exemplifies the characteristics of a faithful father—one who shows obeisance, obedience, a willingness to offer, and trusts in God for the outcome.
Fathers emulate Abraham's example in your own lives, lead your families with unwavering faith and devotion to God.
